Victor Wembanyama Shuts Down Summer League: What’s Next for the Rising French Star?

French basketball sensation Victor Wembanyama has made quite an impact in his first two Summer League games in Las Vegas. However,  the 19-year-old Victor Wembanyama will not play for the remainder of the Summer League, providing him with some much-needed rest.

Wembanyama, who was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, showcased his potential in his debut game, although he admitted feeling a little lost on the court. He recorded 9 points, leaving fans eager to see more. And he didn’t disappoint in his second outing against the Portland Trail Blazers, putting up an impressive 27 points and 12 rebounds, despite the team’s  85-80 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The second performance didn’t come as a surprise for anyone who followed Wembanyama in France’s LNB Pro A Finals. He scored 8 points for Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 against Monaco, which eventually won the championship in three games. But like in Summer League, Wembanyama improved in Game 2 with 19 points and 7 rebounds. In Game 3, he recorded 22 points,7  rebounds and 4 blocks.

Considering the short turnaround between the French league finale and the NBA Draft, it was initially uncertain if Wembanyama would participate in the Summer League due to his commitments in the upcoming months. He was slated to represent France in the FIBA World Cup in Indonesia but later decided to prioritize rest. Resting during the offseason became a necessary sacrifice to pursue his career goals and achieve success with the French national team.

Wembanyama’s decision to focus on rest seems prudent, given his recent intense schedule and the demands of the NBA’s 82-game regular season. The young talent had generated significant buzz leading up to the NBA draft 2023, with appearances at various events and even throwing the ceremonial first pitch for the New York Yankees. However, his media presence took an unexpected turn when a security incident involving pop star Britney Spears caught public attention. Wembanyama had to address the incident, which likely influenced his subsequent decision to step away from the media for the rest of the offseason.

Now, with Summer League concluded for Wembanyama, he can fully dedicate himself to preparing for the grueling NBA season ahead. Fans eagerly anticipate witnessing his growth and impact on the court as he transitions to the professional level making him one of the most exciting prospects in the game.
